One tower closes, but another stays open as the FAA releases its list of airports that will be affected by sequestration cuts.
The agency has the control tower at Columbia Regional on its list of 149 “contract towers” that will be closed. The shutdowns will take place over a four-week period, starting April 7th. American Airlines has told city leaders a tower closure would not affect its scheduled service to Chicago and Dallas.
Jefferson City Memorial Airport gets to keep its tower open for now, but only because it is one of 16 towers with a cost-sharing mechanism specifically set up by Congress. That tower could still close in October if Congress doesn’t re-authorize its funding.
