Split Verdict in Shaken-Baby Case

Posted by Warren Krech on March 14, 2013

The verdict is split for a Mid-Missouri woman prosecutors say caused severe injuries to an infant.

On Wednesday, a jury said Shelly Richter of Taos was not guilty of child abuse, but was guilty of endangering the welfare of a child. Lane Schaeffer was left blind and severely disabled following an incident at Richter’s home–based day care in 2010.

Doctors testified that the baby’s injuries appeared to have come from ‘shaken baby syndrome.’ Richter claimed she accidentally dropped the child, and never struck or shook the boy.
