If your bookie is a Lake-area man who calls himself “Top Cat,” you’ll need to find somewhere else to place your bets.
70-year-old Terry Lee Campbell of Lake Ozark is one of 57 defendants named in a federal indictment Wednesday. Prosecutors say an online enterprise called “Legendz Sports” has taken more than $1 billion in illegal bets since 2003. The operation was primarily run by people in Oklahoma and Texas.
The indictment says the U.S. citizens operated the ring with internet providers and payment processors in Central and South America, but took bets almost exclusively from domestic gamblers. Campbell is accused of sending tens of thousands of dollars from gamblers to the outfit’s bosses.
If he’s convicted, Campbell faces a potential sentence of decades in federal prison.
