You won’t see any ballot issues seeking to eliminate city funding for a proposed conference center.
An anti–conference group, Citizens Against the Conference Center, consider getting petition signatures for two ballot issues. One would have eliminated the 4% lodging tax and barred the city from using public funds to help build the center. The other would have stopped any city funding, but left the lodging tax on the books.
Jefferson City’s attorney says the charter forbids using the petition process to address ordinances regarding tax levies or the appropriation of city funds. The group’s spokesman says the decision could end up in court.
