A federal judge has awarded 11-million dollars to Ryan Ferguson, his family and their attorneys in his civil rights lawsuit against members of the Columbia Police Department. Ferguson was convicted of killing Columbia Tribune Sports Editor Kent Heitholt in October of 2001. Ferguson spent about ten years in prison before the key witness in the case recanted his testimony. Ferguson sued six Columbia detectives whom he said fabricated evidence against him. Under the settlement agreement, the city of Columbia is liable for 2-point-75 million dollars of the settlement. The rest of the money will come from insurance policies of the defendants.
