Barnes Leads Welfare Panel

It could save Missouri a whole lot of money…but not everyone is on board.

On Monday, social service officials told a House panel the state could save $28 million every year by getting more people onto federal disability.  They say it saves money for the state to assign people to the appropriate program.

Meanwhile, Republican State Rep. Jay Barnes of Jefferson City leads a committee that’s investigating a contract that pays an outside company $2,300 for every Missourian moved onto disability.  Barnes says welfare requires people to look for jobs, but disability provides no incentive to find work.
