It was a pat on the back instead of a pink slip for the Jefferson City Administrator. Matt Michaels reports…

The City Council approved a motion of confidence in Nathan Nickolaus at a special meeting on Friday. The meeting centered on a controversial email he sent to city staff about the proposed fire department sales tax, and the fallout after that message was made public. City Attorney Drew Hilpert found the email to be legal and factual, and Councilman Bryan Pope publicly apologized after calling for the administrator’s ouster following Tuesday’s election.

Nickolaus said he never would have sent the message if he had known the flap it would cause. He says the special meting was necessary, but feels the public would rather see the City Council working to improve the city rather than settling controversy.

The council stayed in open session for nearly two hours to discuss the issue, and public comments overwhelmingly supported the city administrator. Eight council members voted “yes” on the motion of confidence in Nickolaus, with Pope and Carrie Carroll voting no… though Pope was the one who introduced that motion.

The council’s next meeting is set for August 20th.
