New JCHS Must Have Public Support

Jefferson City Public Schools

Can Jefferson City build a new high school without a major increase in the property tax levy? In a word, “no.”

Jefferson City school board president Joy Sweeney admits a new high school complex complete with individual “learning academies” won’t happen unless voters back the funding plan. A 55–cent bond and levy increase should be on the Jefferson City ballot next spring.

If this is a Jefferson City bond issue which is a tax increase for J.C. Property owners how do the families of “outside the city limits students” share in the cost?
Why was the land already purchased (close to the new St. Mary’s Hospital) and who was the seller? Is the land purchase also dependent on the passage of the bond issue or are we committed regardless? And, finally, will the memory bricks, class time capsules, etc. be moved to the new location if the bond issue passes?
