New Plan For Crowded County Jail

Posted by Warren Krech on July 26, 2013

As KWOS News first told you, the new Cole County Jail is just about full. Now county commissioners are working with the sheriff to allow some non–violent inmates to get out while awaiting trial.

The jail can handle just under 200 inmates and has been close to that number for some time.

The county will allow some of those prisoners to leave jail on electronic monitoring, drug testing or other means. Cole County Presiding Commissioner Marc Ellinger says a backlog of criminal cases in the courts is causing the overcrowding issues.
