State Budget Difficult in National Climate, says Schaefer

That deal in Congress Wednesday night ended the federal government shutdown and helped avoid default, but one state leader says it’s just kicking the can down the road. Kurt Schaefer is in charge of the Missouri Senate’s budget committee. The Columbia Republican says he gets updates every morning on the state’s budget projections.

“Very, very difficult situation to be in to be fiscally responsible in a state like Missouri, but you are tethered to a federal government that is completely irresponsible,” says Schaefer.

The Congressional deal this week only guarantees the government will stay open until mid-January. It does demand negotiations between the Senate and House on a long-term spending plan.
