A wanna-be street racer is cooling his heels in the Maries County Jail after challenging deputies to a drag race. Officers say that 31–year old David Williams of St. Clair pulled up next to them near Vichy yesterday morning and asked if they wanted to race.

Williams then sped off in a stolen car. He was caught after the chase led through Vienna at speeds topping 90 miles an hour. An officer finally stopped the car after shooting into the engine. Williams faces felony charges including resisting arrest and assault on a law officer.

Investigators say he appeared to be high on drugs and had to be dragged from the car.
