Verdict Overturned in Shaken Baby Case

Posted by Warren Krech on April 19, 2013

A Cole County woman will go back to court for a new trial after her conviction is overturned. An infant in Shelley Richter’s care suffered serious injuries.

Judge Pat Joyce orders the new trial for Richter saying a sheriff’s report on a child abuse hotline call wasn’t given to lawyers on either side.

Richter was convicted of endangering the welfare of the child, but was acquitted on child abuse charges. Richter had claimed that little Lane Schaefer was hurt when she dropped the baby after tripping over another child at her Taos home-based daycare. The little boy was left with serious long-term injuries.

Richter’s case goes back to trial in June.
