KWOS is highlighting an outstanding local high school athlete each week, brought to you by MU Health Care Sports Medicine. This week, we feature the Helias Lady Crusaders Softball Team.
Last Friday, the Lady Crusaders scored four runs in the first inning, then added eight runs in the fourth as they shutout Parkway West 12-0 in five innings to capture the Class 4 State Title.
The win over Parkway West came a day after Helias beat Platte County 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning in the state semifinals.
“The word sacrifice keeps coming to mind because we did have a lot of talent and they worked hard but writing the line-up every day was a challenge at times this year because it always seemed like maybe two or three people are getting left out or aren’t getting opportunities that they’ve earned rightfully so. But you never heard a complaint, they were great teammates. When you do little things like that that are big when you want to make a deep playoff run, that’s pretty special and I think that was a big piece of why we ended up where we did,” said Helias Head Softball Coach Kelly Fick.
Helias finished the season with a mark of 26-6. On offense, the team averaged more than eight runs a game and scored 10 or more runs in a game 14 times this season, including the state title game.
Congratulations to the Helias Lady Crusaders Softball Team. They are State Champions!
