KWOS is highlighting an outstanding local high school athlete each week, brought to you by MU Health Care Sports Medicine. This week we feature Jefferson City Jays wrestler Deegan Mitchell.

At the Missouri State High School Activities Association State Wrestling Championships in Columbia, Deegan Mitchell won a state title in the Class 3 150 pound weight class. Mitchell went 4-0 in the tournament.

After picking up a pin in the opening round, Deegan beat Brady Armstrong (Hillsboro) 4-2 in the state quarterfinals. Saturday, he beat Rowdy Narron (St. Michael the Archangel) 6-3 in the state semifinals. It was career win number 150 for Mitchell at Jefferson City. In the state title match, the senior beat D'Monta Bagby (St. Charles) 1-0.

"Deegan is not only a great leader but also a steward of the sport. He is the hype guy in the room, always pushing himself and striving to improve, as well as encouraging others to do the same. As team captain, he serves as
a fantastic role model for young wrestlers," said Jefferson City Head Wrestling Coach Darrell Luebbert.

Deegan Mitchell ends his senior season at Jefferson City High School undefeated at 45-0.

Mitchell was one of four medalists for Jefferson City at the state wrestling championships. Senior D'Andre Watts finished in 6th place at 144 while Mikel Carver took home a 4th place medal at 165. Senior Luke Jenkins finished in 5th place at 215.
