KWOS is highlighting an outstanding local high school athlete each week, brought to you by MU Health Care Sports Medicine. This week, we feature Jefferson City Jays wide receiver Tanner Wingrath.
Friday night, Tanner Wingrath’s 61 yard punt return for a touchdown sparked a Jefferson City come back as the Jays scored 29 points in the fourth quarter to defeat Capital City 35-28.
Wingrath put the finishing touches on the fourth quarter rally when he caught a 45 yard touchdown pass from Quarterback Max Stackman with just 27 seconds left in the game to break a 28-28 tie.
“He’s a great leader. A great leadership kid, a great young man. But on top of that, his speed, athleticism and toughness when he has the ball in his hands is just tremendous. He does a great job and we’re pleased to have him,” said Jefferson City Head Football Coach Eric Thomas.
This Friday night, Jefferson City travels to Columbia to meet Columbia Hickman. It will be the 123rd meeting between the two schools on the football field in a series that started back in 1911.
