Residents in Columbia’s Thornbrook neighborhood are raising money to pay for the funeral expenses for Marcia Lyon, who was killed in last week’s fire at the Perkins home in Fayette.

The 63-year-old Lyon, who lived in Armstrong, delivered mail in Thornbrook during the day and worked nights at the Perkins home. Thornbrook resident Brooke Sydenstricker McCarty tells 939 the Eagle that Lyon delivered mail in the snow and subfreezing temperatures before she died:

“I still had her footprints in my snow for days to come and I was able to take pictures and get those to her family. I’m going to do a real cool poem that I’m going to get of the footprints in the sand and send that to her family for them to have forever,” she says.

Memorial services are set for Friday at 3 at Fayette’s Faith Family church. The church is expected to be packed for the 1 pm visitation and for the service. Marcia was one of three people killed in last week’s fire at the Perkins home. Marcia was a caregiver at the home for more than 20 years and she’s also been the sole mail carrier for Columbia’s Thornbrook neighborhood for 25 years. Ms. Sydenstricker McCarty tells 939 the Eagle that Marcia always went above the call of duty:

“We’ve done a gratitude journal at our clubhouse where everybody can write little notes that hopefully the family can just cherish for years to come and read all of the things and how special she was to us”,” she says.
