Police chief Jill Schlude briefed the city council at this week’s meeting, saying police did a lot of enforcement action last past weekend:

“And I will tell you, not only myself but two of my assistant chiefs worked downtown over the weekend. And the remark that they made to me after the first night was they were absolutely shocked by the number of firearms that were being legally carried downtown,” Chief Schlude tells council members.

Chief Schlude says that last Friday night, officers located and returned firearms to about 20 people who were stopped by police and did not appear to be patronizing any businesses downtown.

There were a total of 27 law enforcement officers on both Friday and Saturday nights, representing Columbia Police, the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, MUPD and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
