A longtime Fayette caregiver who also served as a mail carrier in Columbia’s Thornbrook neighborhood will be laid to rest Friday afternoon.

63-year-old Marcia Lyon was one of three people killed in last week’s fire at the Perkins home in Fayette. Listeners tells 939 the Eagle that Marcia worked two jobs and helped everyone she knew, from the elderly to children to those with special needs and her nine grandchildren. Thornbrook resident Brooke Sydenstricker McCarty spoke to 939 the Eagle and remembers Lyon stopping at garage sales to try to help others:

“I know that myself and others would always just bag up clothes and put them in her mail truck. We were like you’re not paying for these, you do so much for us. It was like, we know she needed those,” McCarty says.

Ms. Lyon also purchased presents throughout the year for the Fayette holiday house, helping children in need. The Columbia Thornbrook neighborhood’s Facebook page has more than 150 comments from residents praising longtime mail carrier Lyon. The Thornbrook Homeowners Association’s Sydenstricker McCarty tells 939 the Eagle that the Facebook comments highlight Marcia’s work ethic, kindness and dedication:

“You know she took time and wanted to hand-deliver you something if she could. And just get to know you and your family,” she says.

Ms. Lyon delivered mail at Thornbrook during the day and worked nights at the Perkins home.

Memorial Services for Marcia Lyon will take place Friday at 3 at Fayette’s Faith Family church. Visitation will take place from 1-3 at the church. Thornbrook residents have already raised more than $6,000 to help pay for the funeral service.
