The high school juniors at mid-Missouri’s New Franklin high school who took the first tour of the Missouri Supreme Court’s new Judicial Discovery Center praise the exhibits and videos.
New Franklin R-1 junior Korinna Chitwood joined her classmates and principal for the tour in Jefferson City and tells 939 the Eagle the visit to our state Supreme Court was a great opportunity:
“They set this whole Discovery Center up in a way where it’s easy to understand and it’s easy to just go through it on your own or with a tour guide. And people of any age really are going to have a pretty easy time going through and learning about things,” Chitwood says.
Some of Korinna’s classmates describe the center as inspirational. Missouri Supreme Court Judge Mary Russell notes the state Supreme Court held its first session ever in 1821 in mid-Missouri’s Franklin, in Howard County.
The approximately 25 high school juniors from mid-Missouri’s rural New Franklin were the first students to tour the state Supreme Court’s new Judicial Discovery Center in Jefferson City. The students and their principal were guests of the Missouri Supreme Court. The students were also joined by State Sen. Kurtis Gregory (R-Marshall) and State Rep. Tim Taylor (R-Speed), who represent New Franklin in the Legislature. Senator Gregory praises the New Franklin students and their knowledge:
“New Franklin … river town. Great people there. Howard County. Just happy that I was able to make it down here and experience this first hand. As far as I know they’re the first school group to go through this,” Senator Gregory says.
The interactive exhibits emphasize the rule of law and that judges do not make laws.
