The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control (DDCC) is investigating the officer-involved shooting that happened Christmas morning at the Break Time on Columbia’s East Stadium, near Highway 63.
Columbia deputy police chief Matt Stevens says CPD responded to a call at about 10:10 on Christmas morning about an adult male with a knife on Cinnamon Hill. Police located the suspect at about 10:45 at the Break Time on East Stadium, which is across the street from a Taco Bell. Deputy Chief Stevens says the suspect tried to assault one of the responding officers with a knife:
“A taser was deployed by one of the officers. However the suspect continued the assault and attacked one of the officers with a knife at which point two officers discharged their firearms,” Deputy chief Stevens says.

CPD has requested that the Patrol’s DDCC investigate the incident, and DDCC took control of the scene. CPD also says that while they won’t discuss specific personnel actions, it is standard practice to place officers directly involved in such incidents on administrative leave.
