Columbia’s mayor and business leaders joined Columbia College (CC) students, faculty and staff for Friday’s inauguration of new college president Dr. Toby Arquette.

President Arquette received a standing ovation from the audience after Friday’s inaugural address, which focused on his background and his vision. He was a first-generation college student and praises CC’s students and faculty. He also says a Columbia College education should and does open a lifetime of opportunities.
Columbia College Board of Trustees chair Anita Abbott Timmons praises CC president Arquette, saying he has a vision rooted in academic excellence. President Arquette tells 939 the Eagle that missions should ensure over time:
“For me as I learn about the college’s history, where we are today, what we’ve done and where we want to go, I think it boils down to a very simple conviction, which is that we want to create lives of opportunity and purpose,” he says.
President Arquette says it’s not just about access but also giving people opportunities to lead lives of success.
The Jane Froman singers performed during Friday’s ceremony. After the ceremony, several hundred people attended a community reception at Dulany Hall.
