Columbia’s city council will first-read a proposal Monday evening involving the definition of a data center.

City staff says getting a definition would allow Columbia to begin regulating data centers within the unified development code. Mayor Barbara Buffaloe tells 939 the Eagle this is important:
“As everything evolves, as you know orientation of how buildings are used and technology advances, we need to make sure that our code is staying up to date on these advances in technology,” Mayor Buffaloe says.
The proposed bill defines a data center as a building or facility used for the storage, management, processing or transmission of digital data that typically contains computers, network equipment, systems, servers or appliances.

Mayor Buffaloe tells 939 the Eagle that they need to make sure the city code is updated regarding technology:
“So this takes into that consideration. As we think about what are the utility needs, what are the infrastructure needs, what is it we need to do so people know what’s allowed in certain zoning classes,” the mayor says.
The bill will be first-read Monday evening and is scheduled for a vote on April 6.
