Columbia Police investigators say Covarrubias was involved in a verbal altercation near Ninth and Broadway and that he allegedly fired several shots toward the people he was arguing with. CPD says the three victims struck by gunfire were in the 1000 block of East Broadway and were not involved in the altercation.

CPD says one of the victims is currently on artificial life support due to being struck by gunfire. Stephens College says senior nursing student Aiyanna Williams, a Battle high school graduate, has been declared legally brain dead. Prosecutor Johnson also tells 939 the Eagle that they haven’t received any information that the shooting came from inside a vehicle.

Covarrubias will likely make his initial court appearance Monday afternoon in Boone County Circuit Court, either on the 1 or 1:30 video docket.
