UPDATE: Murder charges filed in downtown Columbia triple shooting

A Florida man is now charged with second degree murder for Saturday’s early-morning deadly triple shooting in downtown Columbia.

Boone County Prosecutor Roger Johnson tells 939 the Eagle his office added the second degree murder charge on Tuesday. Prosecutor Johnson says 23-year-old Misael Covarrubias of Florida is now charged with second degree murder, two counts of first degree assault, two counts of armed criminal action and one count of unlawful use of a weapon.

Covarrubias is jailed without bond and will make his next court appearance on Tuesday afternoon before Boone County Judge Kimberly Shaw.

This weekend’s shooting near Ninth and Broadway killed 21-year-old Stephens College senior nursing student Aiyanna Williams. CPD’s three-page probable cause statement alleges that Covarrubias fired 11 shots from his pistol in the “the busy, crowded downtown area.
