Tuesday is Veterans Day, a federal, Missouri, county and city holiday.

Banks and financial institutions are closed, and there will be no regular mail delivery. Most government offices are closed today to observe Veterans Day, which the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs describes as a celebration “to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.”

Most of the 14,000 state employees in Jefferson City are off today and courthouses in all 114 Missouri counties are closed. The Missouri State Highway Patrol, county Sheriff’s offices and other emergency services are open today. Veterans Day is one of Missouri’s 13 official state holidays.

This is also the third straight year that Columbia city offices are closed for Veterans Day. City manager De’Carlon Seewood led the effort to add Veterans Day as a paid city holiday, saying the city wants to recognize the many city employees and their families who have served our nation.

Residential curbside trash will not be collected today and will be delayed by one day for the rest of the week.
